I think that with "shield in blood", the author was trying to convey the idea that a good defense can sometimes be just as violent and bloody as can any offense. In other words, sometimes when you try to defend yourself, you figuratively or literally "bloody" your opponent. But if I'm wrong, I'm sure whoever wrote it can correct me:)
