There is also another fix.... occasionally allow successful poems to recombine by straightforward addition rather than crossover. That way the pared-down lines and couplets will slowly compound to form longer strings. Selection then can start to occur on the level of a single line and also on the higher level of overall sense when lines are compounded. Not sure how far this strays from the biological model but I think there may be some support for it.
