I think the general set up seems to favour simplicity. The more complex options are going to take longer to read and even if they undergo favourable selection, it seems to me their breeding rate is likely to be lower. You are ultimately breeding poems to the lowest common denominator and I suspect the example you cited is just too unrewarding at first reading to survive in the face of a simple sentence. That said, if the database is large enough there should hopefully be some richness retained in even the short sentences and over time you may see a gradual lengthening of letter strings which are still immediately meaningful. I think I am seeing that in the top 10 which appears to be gradually developing longer strings since I first started checking it. I guess the only way to find out is to let the system run and see whether it stagnates or not. If it doesn't work, there's always v2.
