You're right, except for 2 things:
1) You're talking about making absolute rather than relative judgments, and the problem with that is that the scale changes as the population evolves.
2) Yup, sometimes the voting isn't fair. And sometimes the fittest animal dies in a freak accident. Oh, well.
Seriously, you must be able to find SOMETHING that you like more in one than the other...

: it seems to me that you should be able to skip a vote if both 'poems' are equally repugnant, incoherent etc. that way you aren't conferring a competitive disadvantage or advantage just to get on to the next poem...
