Could the fitness function be determined as the number of votesfor as a percentage of total votes (votesfor + votesagainst)? This would prevent older poems from having a fitness advantage purely from having been alive longer and getting a lot of positive votes at the start.
I say this because the surviving 60 or so gen 0 poems must have had a huge number of votes at the start and are likely to stick around for ages despite being comparatively unfit.
